What rugby league competitions can you bet on?
The two biggest domestic leagues for rugby league are Super League and NRL. Super League features 12 teams, and after a gruelling season, the top six then enter the playoffs which culminate in the Grand Final – Super League's championship-deciding game.
Down-under, the NRL is rugby league's premier competition featuring teams from Australia plus a single outfit from New Zealand. Similarly to Super League, the top eight teams at the end of the regular season then compete in the finals series, which leaves two teams remaining to contest the Grand Final – one of the biggest dates in the Aussie sporting calendar.
Other popular Rugby League competitions include the Challenge Cup knockout competition, the State of Origin series featuring Australia's greatest sporting rivalry between New South Wales Blues and the Queensland Maroons and the men's and women's Rugby League World Cup featuring the very best national teams.
How to bet on rugby league
Rugby league is ideal for 1X2 (three-way) betting where you'll see better odds compared to two outcome sports, such as tennis or darts. Because of the high variation of points between games too, handicap and over/under betting are also popular for rugby league.
What is 1X2 betting?
In rugby league, the most common bet is 1X2 betting, more commonly referred to as a three-way bet. A 1X2 bet is a wager on a game that has three outcomes: home win, draw or away win. If Warrington were playing at home against Toulouse, the three outcomes are represented by either 1,2 or X. 1 is for a home win (Warrington to win), X a draw and 2 for an away win (Toulouse to win).
What is handicap betting?
Handicap betting, aka spread betting, offers a suppositional advantage to the underdog or disadvantage to the favourite by 'adding' or 'subtracting' points to the full-time scores. If the Penrith Panthers (favourites) are playing Melbourne Storm (underdogs), and you put your money on Melbourne Storm to win with a +4.5 handicap, your bet lands even if the score finishes 14-10 to Penrith Panthers because the +4.5 handicap is added to the full-time points score to become 14-14.5 to Melbourne.
Betting on points
Due to the large deviation of points scored in the average rugby league game, there are plenty of opportunities for over/under betting. This can be over/under the total number of points in a game, total individual team points or just the first half amongst others. The same over/under markets are also available for the number of tries. See our player markets too for options such as first, last or anytime try scorers.
