What Is Lacrosse?

With its origins dating back to the 12th century indigenous people of North America, Lacrosse grew in popularity and was modified by European colonists in the 17th century to the professional form we know today. With four versions: men's field lacrosse, women's Lacrosse, box and intercrosse, there are a few different sticks, fields, rules and types of equipment that you need to know before betting. The men's field lacrosse games are played outdoors and are a contact sport. All players wear protective helmets, gloves, shoulder and elbow pads. With 10 players on each team, three attackmen, midfielders, defensemen and one goalie, each team have 60 minutes to carry, pass, catch and shoot goals. If a player scores behind the line, a goal is worth two points, while scoring inside the line is one point.

The women's lacrosse games are also outdoor but doesn't allow body contact, only stick to stick. Women players only wear mouth and eye gear, while goalies wear helmets and protective pads. Women's Lacrosse also doesn't allow players to have a loose net, or pocket, on the lacrosse stick. With 12 players in women's Lacrosse, there are boundaries on the field which don't exist in men's games: 8-meter fan in from the goal and 12-meter half circle which surrounds the 8-meter fan. The goal circle is also positioned closer to the end line.

Box lacrosse is similar to field lacrosse, just played indoors with teams of 5 runners plus a goalie. This version was introduced in Canada in the 1930s to promote business for hockey areas outside of ice hockey betting and sports season. The goals are smaller than on the field, and the goaltender wears more protective padding. The style of this lacrosse game is quicker, with the attacking team on a 30 second timer to shoot a goal when gaining possession of the ball, and no offsides in box lacrosse. With it being a faster pace game, there is also more physical contact, so players wear more protective gear.

Finally, intercrosse is the mixed gender non-contact game played indoors, using a plastic stick and a softer ball. Also called soft stick lacrosse, it uses a standardised set of rules with five players per side and a field size of 20m wide and 40m long with the goal box being the same size as box lacrosse. Popular for the youth and adults and played in Quebec, Canada as well as many European countries, there is a World Championship held bi-annually.
